...one test of a viable culture is its ability to live in balance
with its habitat. This test is perhaps too pragmatically simple
for a culture where the abstract theories of philosophers have been
given, in certain powerful circles, more legitimacy than the
contextualized forms of knowledge that have evolved in habitats
lacking a margin of surplus that allowed for experimentation with
abstract ideas.
